The Need to Maintain Affordable Housing PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 15 August 2007
In Saskatchewan there has been much discussion of late about the impact of the "petro dollars" on Saskatoon and Saskatchewan.
I wanted to raise some concerns about the inflation being created in the housing and rental market. Some people are being forced into paying rents that they can ill afford,  and we are seeing the afforable rental base being eroded by the conversion of apartment blocks into condos.
Our political leadership at both the municipal and provincial level should recognize the housing crisis we are in and put a moratorium for one year on rent increases and condo conversions. This will give time to properly plan and act on  how those people who are not sharing in the petro dollar prosperity can get the affordable good housing that they have the right to.
